Bele Fleck wins big for “Throw Down”

Bela Fleck took home his 12th and 13th Grammy Awards last week for his innovative ’09 album, “Throw Down Your Heart:  Africa Sessions.”

That album holds an interesting premise – he took a month-long trip to Africa in 2005 to explore the roots of the Banjo.  He stopped at several villages in varying African nations to learn the regional style of the instrument.  The album finds him collaborating with musicians from Tanzania, Uganda, Senegal, Madagascar, South Africa and Mali.

Bela Fleck tickets are available now – he is traveling to support the album over the winter and spring.

Fleck brings ‘Melody’ on the road

Bela Fleck is on presently on tour, hitting a number of small venues and college campuses through the end of October when he’ll finish things off 10/28 at the San Francisco Jazz Festival.

Since he was just 15 years old, Bela Fleck has been plucking the banjo. He then followed that passion by attending New York’s High School of Music and Art. After just five years on banjo, Fleck released his first solo album Crossing the Tracks in 1982, and he’s been going strong ever since.

Fleck’s current tour is with bassist Edgar Meyer and percussionist Zakir Hussain, who collaborated with Bela on his latest release. The group’s new album, The Melody of Rhythm: Triple Concerto and Music for Trio, was recorded with the Detroit Symphony conducted by the famous Leonard Slatkin.  The latest tour highlights music from this effort.
